It isn't a bigger hit. It's a wider one.

200 mg of caffeine is about one strong coffee. The other eight active ingredients are why a session on Initiate doesn't feel like a session on coffee.

4 gL-citrulline
3.2 gBeta-alanine
200 mgCaffeine

Two ways to build a pre-workout.

Most start with “how much caffeine?” Initiate started with “what does each ingredient do?”

Four systems, one scoop.

Every active is here to do one job, at a dose you can check against the label. Caffeine's job comes last.

System 1 of 4: blood flow and hydration

Widen the pipes.

Your muscle only gets what your blood delivers. Citrulline is the raw material your body turns into nitric oxide, the signal that relaxes blood vessels. Glycerol, taurine and salt help the muscle hold water while you train.

4,000 mg L-citrulline 1,000 mg HydroPrime® glycerol 1,000 mg taurine 200 mg Himalayan rock salt
The dose against the research

Trials of citrulline before hard lifting use 3 to 8 g, most often as 8 g of citrulline malate, which carries about 4.5 to 5.3 g of actual citrulline. Ours is 4 g free-form, so it sits inside that range rather than being a rounding of it [2][3].

Glycerol helps the body hold on to water. HydroPrime® is a 65% glycerol powder, so 1,000 mg delivers 650 mg of glycerol. Taurine and the 80 mg of sodium from the rock salt sit alongside it.

System 2 of 4: endurance

Delay the burn.

The burn is acid building up inside the muscle. Beta-alanine builds up carnosine, the muscle's own defence against that acid, so the burn arrives later in the set. It builds with daily use, not on day one.

3,200 mg beta-alanine
The dose against the research

The studied range is 3.2 to 6.4 g a day, taken daily for weeks. 3.2 g is the bottom of that range, so it loads slower: plan on six to eight weeks of daily use, rest days included, before the endurance part shows up [4][5].

A tingle across the face, neck or hands about fifteen minutes in is paraesthesia, caused by the beta-alanine. It is harmless and it fades.

System 3 of 4: focus

Hold your focus.

Tyrosine is the raw material your brain uses to make its switched-on chemicals, the ones that hold attention under pressure. Salidroside is the active in rhodiola, and Initiate uses it at 98%, not the 1% found in standard extract.

1,000 mg TyroPure® L-tyrosine 20 mg SalidroPure® salidroside
What we can and can't promise here

Human trials on tyrosine and salidroside are fewer and smaller than on citrulline, beta-alanine and caffeine. We chose the exact versions of both because that is the part we can control and print. What you feel on the day is mostly the caffeine and the pump; these two are not the reason you will notice minute twenty.

System 4 of 4: energy

200 mg caffeine. Not 300. On purpose.

Caffeine doesn't add energy. It blocks adenosine, the signal that tells your brain it is tired, and 200 mg is enough to do it: about one strong coffee, at the start of the studied window for most bodyweights. The label allows a second scoop if you have earned it.

200 mg caffeine 150 mg theobromine
The dose against the research

The effective window is 3 to 6 mg per kilo of bodyweight, and above 6 mg/kg you get more side effects, not more performance. 200 mg is 3.3 mg/kg at 60 kg and 2.4 mg/kg at 85 kg: the low end on purpose [1].

Theobromine is the cocoa compound, a slower-acting relative of caffeine. It is here at its printed dose and we don't make claims for it beyond that.

Not the ingredient. The exact version.

A label can say rhodiola, glycerol or L-tyrosine without telling you which version went in. Three of Initiate's nine come from NNB Nutrition, who developed them and helped build the formula. Two are the concentrated version. One is grown instead of made.

Rhodiola extract is 1% salidroside. SalidroPure® is 98%.

Rhodiola is a plant. Salidroside is the active in it. Standard extract is mostly plant. SalidroPure® is mostly active.

1 in 100Standard rhodiola extract

98 in 100SalidroPure® in Initiate

20 mg of SalidroPure® carries the salidroside of 2,000 mg of standard rhodiola extract. That is the 20 mg printed on the label.

Standardised rhodiola rosea extract is commonly 1% salidroside. SalidroPure® is at least 98% salidroside by NNB Nutrition's specification. Comparison by weight.

Basic glycerol powder is about 25% glycerol. HydroPrime® is 65%.

Glycerol helps the muscle hold water, the pump that isn't nitric oxide. Basic glycerol powder is mostly carrier, and it sets hard in the tub. HydroPrime® is 65% glycerol and stays a powder.

1,000 mg = 650 mg glycerol

Grown, not made.

Standard L-tyrosine is made from petrochemicals or animal by-products. TyroPure® is the same amino acid, grown by fermentation.

1,000 mg in every scoop

Formulated in partnership with NNB Nutrition. Their name is on the back of the tub because they helped put the formula together, not because we bought a logo.

Every dose printed

Where a label gives you a blend name and one total, you are being asked to trust that the expensive ingredients are not a sprinkle. You can read ours instead: nine active ingredients, nine printed doses, no proprietary blend.

Every batch screened

Initiate is a HASTA Certified Product. Every batch goes to an independent NATA-accredited laboratory and is screened against more than 250 substances on the WADA prohibited list, batch by batch, not a one-off sample from the first run.

HASTA Certified Product

Screening is a check for prohibited substances. It is not a promise of potency or results, and no programme can guarantee a product is free of every banned substance. If you compete under a testing programme, check with your sport's anti-doping body before using any supplement, including this one.

Is it for you?

Built for

  • Athletes who compete under a drug-testing programme
  • Anyone who wants a full-strength pre-workout without a 400 mg stimulant load
  • People who read labels and want every dose printed
  • Morning and early-afternoon training

Not for

  • Children, or anyone pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Anyone sensitive to caffeine
  • Late-evening sessions, unless you already know caffeine does not touch your sleep

How to use

  1. Mix one level scoop (12.6 g) into 200 to 350 ml of cold water, 30 minutes before training.
  2. New to pre-workout, or caffeine-sensitive? Start with half a scoop and see how you respond.
  3. Take it daily, rest days included. That is the only way the beta-alanine reaches the level it needs. The caffeine and the pump you will feel on day one; the endurance part builds over six to eight weeks.
  4. Expect the tingle. It is the beta-alanine, it is harmless and it fades.
  5. Do not exceed two scoops a day, and count every other caffeine source you had that day on top of it.

Questions people ask before they buy

Why only 200 mg of caffeine?

Because that is where it stops helping. The research puts the useful window at 3 to 6 mg per kilo of bodyweight, and above 6 mg/kg you get side effects rather than performance. For most people 200 mg lands at the start of that window: enough to train hard, not enough to be staring at the ceiling at eleven [1].

Will it keep me awake, and can I stack it with coffee?

Caffeine's half-life is around five hours, so half the 200 mg is still in you five hours later. Train in the morning or early afternoon and you will be fine. As for stacking: count everything. The label caps this product at two scoops a day, and coffee sits on top of that.

Why does it not feel like much on day one?

On day one you will feel the caffeine and the pump, not the endurance part. Beta-alanine works by building up in the muscle over weeks of daily use, and 3.2 g is the slower end of the studied range. Take it daily, rest days included, and by week six to eight the burn arrives later in the set.

How does 4 g of citrulline compare to citrulline malate?

Ours is free-form L-citrulline. Citrulline malate is citrulline bonded to malic acid, so only part of the stated weight is citrulline: about two thirds in a genuine 2:1 product, and independent testing has found some deliver less. So 4 g of free-form citrulline is roughly what an 8 g citrulline malate scoop actually gives you [3].

Is it suitable for women?

Yes, and the dose does not change. Caffeine's effect runs on bodyweight, so if you are lighter, 200 mg goes further rather than falling short. If you are caffeine-sensitive, start with half a scoop and see how you go.
